For Those Who Carry Us

For Those Who Carry UsFour-year-old Nyamiri’s father, Yien, carried her all the way to Akobo Hospital from their tiny village of Wecanyanu. South Sudan’s Akobo County is one of the most remote places on earth, located in a country with only about 200 doctors and nurses for a population of 9 million people. Here, International Medical Corps provides lifesaving health services for patients like Nyamiri, who would otherwise have no access to health care.

Nyamiri arrived at the hospital with malaria and suspected meningitis. So weak that she could not hold her neck up or keep her food down, her father had to prop her up to prevent her from falling. Every day he would walk back and forth to the hospital so that he could care for the rest of his family and also lovingly watch over Nyamiri at her bedside. Of course, Yien was extremely worried about his daughter, who seemed to only be getting worse.

Visibly relieved, Yien said, “The doctors gave her good medicine and care, now she takes the porridge with a spoon for herself.”

If Nyamiri’s father can save her life by carrying her in his arms to the hospital, then we must be there to meet them with the services they need.

This Father’s Day, honor your father—who might similarly carry you to save your life—with a gift to International Medical Corps in his name. Together, we can ensure that more fathers like Yien are able to get their beloved children the health care they deserve.
