Have you ever tried to teach your child about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?
These 17 goals align to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all families can thrive. While these concepts may feel like common sense to an adult, to a child they may raise a few questions. What is poverty? Why are some girls treated worse than boys? Who is hurting our planet?
But don’t worry, Thomas the Tank Engine™ and his friends are here to help. On September 7th, 2018, Mattel Inc. will debut the brand-new season of Thomas & Friends™ on Nick Jr. This is the first-ever collaboration between a preschool brand and the United Nations to promote the SDGS. Together they hope to inspire the next generation of global citizens.
Lessons for the Youngest Global Citizens
The series will touch upon a wide variety of topics, all inspired by SDG content. Through careful deliberation between the Thomas & Friends production team and the UN Department of Public Information’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative, a series of preschool-appropriate values were selected to be showcased throughout the season; 5 Gender Equality, 15 Life on Land, 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and 4 Quality Education.
But the lesson does not stop there! Through a new website launching in September, parents will be able to find helpful tips, activity sheets, and short-form content to take their lessons to the next level. It’s through this content that parents can start meaningful conversations with their children, and introduce the concept of global citizenship.
Thomas & Friends’ New Season Debuts on September 7
The newly transformed Thomas & Friends, will debut September 7th on Nick Jr. with a contemporary feel and refreshed Steam Team composed of a more diverse and gender-balanced lineup. This new team will travel across the globe to new cultures and countries, including China, India, and Australia. Throughout these travels, Thomas will learn a great deal about the SDGs through his new friends and experiences.
Whether you are a long-time fan of Thomas the Tank Engine or new to the brand, this new series will be sure to not only entertain but teach you about the Global Goals. Let’s work with Thomas & Friends to raise the new generation of Global Citizens and support the SDGs in our day to day life.
